hideous aliens are fucking hideous

( HISTORY. )
Hoshi's early life was one full of love, caring, and privilege. The only child of Yuuto and Hinawa Takeda, she was born after several years of failure to conceive a child. Her very existence was akin to a miracle to her family, and so she was loved and doted upon by aunts and uncles and parents and grandparents alike. Especially the parents, who were as loving as they were wealthy - which is to say, incredibly so. Together, the two of them made certain that their precious daughter would want for nothing, and that no matter how busy they might be with their work, they would always make time for their little girl. But for how bright and happy her life seemed to be, an ominous shadow had been cast over her fate, one that threatened to engulf her entire existence in darkness.

One thing the story of Magical Hunter Heavenly Keiko needed was a stoic: a girl who, despite wanting for absolutely nothing, leads an unfulfilled, unhappy life. Someone with a past as dark as her indigo hair, who is aloof and keeps a good, safe distance between herself and the rest of the world. For this purpose, the Directors were drawn to Hoshi and her family, and carefully began to pull the strings that would craft her into the girl they needed to complete their collection of multicolored little girls. The changes were small and almost insignificant at first, but after Hoshi's seventh birthday, they upped the ante, so to speak.

One night, Hinawa inexplicably went insane - the result of the Directors' meddling, of course - and attacked her daughter. This act was so out of character for her, having been such a loving mother until now, that Hoshi very nearly allowed herself to be killed out of pure shock. Rather than fight back, she attempted to push her mother away... who then fell down the stairs to her death.

Such a scandalous story would taint her family's prestigious reputation, of course, so her remaining relatives went to great lengths to keep everything under wraps. The death of Hinawa Takeda was a tragic accident and nothing more. Following her funeral, no one ever really spoke of the incident again. And in the years that passed, Yuuto, stricken with grief over the loss of the woman he had loved so dearly, grew more and more distant from his daughter. Though he did not blame or resent Hoshi for what had happened, he could not even begin to comprehend the why or the how of any of it. What had once been a happy, loving relationship between father and daughter, full of hugs and joy and laughter, was transformed into a strained and awkward thing.

All of this only reinforced Hoshi's belief that everything was her fault, and her fault alone. She was a terrible daughter who had killed her own mother. No wonder Hinawa had tried to kill her; she was an awful human being and a complete monster.

There was, however, a single light in the darkness - at least, that was how little Hoshi saw the way of things.

It was on the night of her mother's death that a purple wolf appeared on her doorstep. Her name was Hotaru, she'd told her, and she had been sent to be Hoshi's friend and keep her safe. This new companion was written off as an imaginary friend by Hoshi's therapist, a coping mechanism with which she could deal with her trauma. Her father was reassured that she would grow out of this phase as she grew older, but the years passed, and Hotaru never actually went away. Hoshi did eventually come to realize that having an imaginary friend past the age of ten was weird, and so, not wanting to cause even more trouble for her family, finally just stopped talking about Hotaru.

Despite it being weird, Hoshi came to rely on Hotaru; the wolf was her only friend in the world, after all, one that had helped her through this very difficult time in her life.

Once she reached adolescence, Hoshi had, understandably, changed quite a lot from the happy little girl she had once been. She spent most of her time alone, throwing herself into her studies and made no efforts to befriend her classmates. Hotaru assured her that it was better this way, and encouraged her to continue distancing herself from her peers. Keep a straight face, never let anyone know what you're feeling, and don't let anyone get too close. Hoshi took that advice to heart and became exactly the cold, distant girl that the Directors intended. She was a monster, wasn't she, and wasn't it better for herself and everyone around her if she just kept to herself? Of course it was.

And then, at last, when Hoshi turned the magical age of sixteen, Hotaru revealed to her the true reason that she had been watching over her all this time. She had been chosen for a greater purpose: she was to be a Magical Hunter, a great and powerful warrior who possessed the strength to defend all of humanity against the awful creatures known as the Devouring. And Hoshi, completely, blissfully oblivious to how her life had been manipulated for this purpose, happily agreed to take on this responsibility.

There were six other Magical Hunters that would join her, but they were all completely unaware of the others' existence, until several battles forced them to work together. Led by the painfully cheerful Keiko Nakagawa, the girls developed strong bonds and came to depend on one another. For the first time in a very, very long time, Hoshi felt accepted and appreciated, and she slowly settled into her place within the group. At long, long last, it seemed like the darkness was finally fading away.

Except not really. Their happiness was short-lived, and soon loss began to take place in their lives once again, when Mayu Kawano passed away from a lifelong illness. Later, Sora Yamamoto would sacrifice herself to protect Keiko from one of their enemies. This was, of course, another scheme orchestrated by the Directors.

Eventually, Hoshi and Mitsuki would go on Scooby Doo detective adventures and begin to unravel the truth behind the strange, tragic coincidences that brought them all together. This reveal brings the foundation of the group tumbling, tumbling down and results in Keiko's suicide, but like fuck am I going to play Hoshi from that point.

( PERSONALITY. )
Blah blah stoic badass blah. Bullet points until I have the energy to do a decent writeup:

  • super cold and distant, doesn't let anyone get too close, emotionally or physically.
  • kind of acts like a jerk, but is a decent person at heart
  • and unlike other people who tend to push others away (cough cough kotone cough), she's polite about it. or... tries to be, at least.
  • really sad and lonely deep inside, weh. kind of really hates herself.
  • tends to fall under the radar, doesn't like to bring a lot of attention to herself unless in Hunter form.
  • doesn't have much of a sense of humor. very dry.
  • very formal and stiff. she comes off as a dohoho arrogant rich kid, but she just acts all stuffy because that makes it easier to close herself off.
  • likes to take her time and think things through. she plans ahead as much as possible, so when she's taken completely by surprise, it throws her off guard.

  • ( ABILITIES. )

By holding her magical key and calling out "unlock the gate to the prison of shadow," Hoshi transforms into a sparkly Magical Hunter, which gives her access to a variety of special abilities. Her outfit changes, she's given a fancy hairdo, her key turns into her weapon (a pair of tekko), and she gains control over the element of darkness. Her abilities are as follows:
    ( PHYSICAL ENHANCEMENTS. )

( SPEED. ) » Much faster than the average human being. As one of the faster Magical Hunters, she can do flash steps and other similar stunts, as well as multiple attacks in rapid succession.
( STRENGTH. ) » Again, she's much stronger than an average person, but not to supernatural extremes. She can pack a punch, for sure, but she can't lift cars or anything crazy like that.
( STAMINA. ) » Increased stamina. Hoshi is pretty tough and can hold her own in a fight for a decent amount of time.
( ENDURANCE. ) » Increased endurance. Hoshi is in the middle in this category. She holds up better than, say, Mitsuki or Keiko, so she can take a few hits, which is necessary, given that she prefers close-range combat.

    ( MAGICAL ENHANCEMENTS. )

( HEALING. ) » Enhanced regeneration. Hoshi can magically heal minor to moderate wounds, as long as she does so within fifteen minutes of their infliction. She can also heal others, but not very well.
( JUMPING. ) » She can jump very high, switch directions mid-jump, double jump, and appear to hang in the air for several moments. This is a sort of magical gravity manipulation.
( SHIELD. ) » Hoshi can produce a shadowy purple shield that deflects attacks. It can be expanded to protect up to three people, but doing so makes it significantly weaker.
( PRISM SHIELD. ) » By the Magical Hunters' strength combined, they can create a very strong, incandescent shield that covers a wide area, and can reflect or absorb as directed. The girls all need to be in harmony for this to work, though, so it's naturally quite difficult to pull off.

    ( SHADOW MANIPULATION. )

Hoshi has control over the element of darkness. She can manipulate shadows as well as space and gravity, bending them to her will in order to attack her foes and obscure herself from her opponent's view. She is also able to channel her control of darkness into specialized attacks. These abilities do not need to be called out by name in order to be successful, but doing so makes them significantly more powerful. However, this calling sequence leaves her vulnerable to enemy attacks.

( SPECTRAL FINGERS. ) » Summons shadowy apparitions that latch onto her foes, causing damage over time.
( HUNGRY FIEND. ) » Drains the health of an enemy to heal her own wounds.
( COSMIC STRIKES. ) » By combining her shadow magic and her martial arts, Hoshi can target her opponent's weak points, paralyzing them or diminishing their strength/stamina.
( TOUCH OF DEATH. ) » Damages an opponent while also causing minor harm to herself. The more effective this ability becomes, the more damage it does to Hoshi.

    ( UNISON ATTACKS. )

Hoshi can harmonize her elemental powers with those of another Magical Hunter, resulting in combination attacks far more powerful than any she can do alone. These attacks are difficult to learn, as well as difficult to pull off, with the same chance of interruption during the calling sequence.

( TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART. ) » (keiko nakagawa) ONCE UPON A TIME I WAS FALLING IN LOVE, NOW I'M ONLY FALLING APART. idk some sort of damage/healy/buffy thing
    ϟ ( UMBRAL FLASH. ) » (mayu kawano)
( ABYSSAL MAELSTROM. ) » (mitsuki ishikawa) A vortex of water that tears a rift in space-time.
( COMBUSTION VOID. ) » (kotone sasaki) A fiery explosion that creates a black hole.
    ( TERRESTRIAL SUPERNOVA. ) » (sora yamamoto)
( NEBULA BURST. ) » (suzume fujioka) A blinding screen of clouds and dust.
    ( SUMMARY. )
The Truman Show + Puella Magi Madoka Magica = intense psychological trauma.
